OpenAI Director Predicts AGI May Arrive in 5 to 15 Years

OpenAI's Director, Adam D'Angelo, has shared some intriguing predictions. He believes Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could be here in 5 to 15 years. If you don’t know, Adam D'Angelo is the CEO of Quora and a board member at OpenAI. He made these statements during an event last week.

D'Angelo said that AGI will bring very big changes to the world. He also mentioned his own community called "Post-AGI Economics." He created it to help people prepare for the major changes that AGI will bring.

OpenAI is also working on new ways to track their progress toward AGI. They have created a five-level classification system to help with this. This system was shared with OpenAI employees.

The first level is chatbots. These are AI with conversational language skills. The second level includes reasoners that can solve human-level problems. The third level involves agents and systems that can take actions. These levels are steps toward reaching AGI.

The fourth and fifth levels are still far off, but the first three levels are already showing promise. Systems that can solve problems and take actions would be very impactful. D'Angelo believes these advancements will be game-changing even before we reach AGI.

Generative AI today still has issues, like hallucinations. But the progress made in the next five years could be double that of the last five years. This rapid growth suggests that reaching AGI within 2030-2045 is possible.

The idea is that AI development is moving faster than ever. We’ve seen a lot of progress in recent years, and it’s likely to accelerate.

As we inch closer to AGI, the changes we will see could be amazing. The world needs to prepare now for what is to come. With advancements in AI, our future looks to be very exciting.

D'Angelo’s predictions highlight the importance of staying updated on AI developments. Watching how these levels of AI unfold will be key. As we move forward, the goal of AGI seems more and more within reach.
