Deep Seek AI’s R1 Light Challenges OpenAI with Revolutionary AI Advances
–
Deep Seek AI from China has presented some surprising news in the AI world. Their new Deep Seek R1 Light preview is live. It shows serious performance in key benchmarks, even challenging OpenAI's models. This is surprising because OpenAI's 01 preview models were just released a couple of months ago. Many expected it to take a year for others to catch up, but Deep Seek AI has done it in two months.
Deep Seek AI, founded in 2023, focuses on advancing general AI abilities. They have developed models that excel in coding, math, reasoning, and natural language tasks. Their previous models, like Deep Seek 2.5 and Deep Seek Coda, have already performed well on major AI benchmarks. Now, the R1 Light preview manages to surpass OpenAI's 01 preview in certain areas.
On the AIM math benchmark, Deep Seek R1 Light scored 52.4, while OpenAI's 01 preview scored 44.6. In another Math 500 benchmark, Deep Seek scored 91.6 compared to 01 preview’s 85.5. However, OpenAI still leads in some other tests. One key part of this success is test time compute. This means the model can think more deeply about challenging problems by using more computing power.
Deep Seek AI's use of test time compute creates a new way to improve AI performance. By allocating more thought tokens to a problem, models can achieve better results. This approach allows models to handle complex prompts more effectively.
Another interesting aspect of Deep Seek AI’s model is its transparency. Users can see the model's chain of thought, which reveals its internal thinking process. This feature helps users understand how the model thinks through problems. It also allows for crafting better prompts by identifying where the model might get confused.
In one example, a model was asked to count the Rs in "strawberry." The model expressed surprise, saying, "Wait a minute, did I just count three Rs?" This shows an intriguing level of internal reasoning. It helps users understand how the model reaches its conclusions.
Deep Seek AI's approach could push OpenAI to move faster. With Deep Seek catching up quickly, the AI landscape is becoming more competitive. This competition may lead to more advancements and improvements in AI models. As developers get insight into these AI thought processes, they can create even better prompts, enhancing AI's capabilities even further.
